King Tuff - Screaming Skull

Single review by KevW

The garage rock scene is simply teeming with life at the moment, on both sides of the Atlantic and down under as well. It's heartening to see bands and artists firing records out like bullets from a machine gun, with Ty Segall in particular leading the way. Following close behind is L.A via Vermont tunesmith King Tuff who only released his debut album in May, and while many bands would spend a year or more releasing several singles from said album and milking it for all it's worth, Mr. Tuff has instead decided to drop two brand new tracks as a 7" or download single. These are no sub-standard album off-cuts either, with 'Love Potion' dabbling in glam rock and the splendid 'Screaming Skull' leading the charge.

What we've certainly learnt about King Tuff this year is that he knows his way around a pop hook or two and on 'Screaming Skull' he takes a melody that sticks like glue to your eardrum and coats it with a bucket-load of handclaps and a shed-full of powerpop goodness. It's as good as anything on his album so as a pointer to future releases this bodes very well for those of us looking for some irresistible guitar-based ear candy. 'Love Potion' isn't short of melody either, but here the sound is a little heavier, mixing the unlikely bedfellows of glam and punk together with equally catchy results. He's a man on fire at the moment, roll on the next album.
