'Dreamers & Lovers' is the latest EP from Brooklyn-based indie/electro duo The Mystic Underground, another one of those who've been in existence for several years, but due to the overwhelming volume of music available are only now making their debut on The Sound Of Confusion (apologies guys, we're a bit slow sometimes). The pair have just posted the video for new single 'Evelyn, You'll Be The Death Of Me', which is the third single from new EP 'Dreamers and Lovers'. Given the EP is only five tracks long, and two of those are remixes, this would seem to be milking things a little, but still, you should do your best to get good songs heard, so here it is.
With synths borrowed from 'Are 'Friends' Electric' , 'Evelyn, You'll Be The Death Of Me' has a retro sound, but where Tubeway Army's classic had a robotic sharpness to it, here those analogue electronics house a warm and soulful vocal that brings a different vibe. This gives a poppier taste to things, almost recalling the discotronica (is that a word?) of people like Erasure. Although this song is accessible it's simply too retro and has just enough of an alternative feel to stop any chance of repeating that sort of chart success The glistening solo towards the end adds tinny yet uplifting twist in the tale and rounds 'Evelyn..' up nicely. Not particularly mystical or underground, but a perfectly serviceable slice of synth-pop nonetheless.
