Five For Free #120

Empress Hotel - Holly

US band Empress Hotel include members from right across the States but are centred around New Orleans brothers Ryan and Eric Rogers. Last month they released their debut full-length 'Heavy Halo'. The group take alternative sounds and styles and mould them into insanely catchy alt-pop tunes. Look no further than free download 'Holly' for a prime example.

He's My Brother, She's My Sister - Let It Live Free

Brought to us by the very same label, Park The Van, are Californian collective He's My Brother, She's My Sister who release their debut album 'Nobody Dances In This Town' next week. We'll take a guess that the blend of garage, blues, country and indie found on freebie 'Let It Live Free' might just be enough to get a few toes tapping though.

Chamber Junkie - Separation

Chamber Junkie is the solo guise of Jimmy Andersen, singer and songwriter with Danish band Among Relatives and on a trip to America he decided to embark upon a more conventional type of songwriting. Single 'Separation' from his new EP isn't the most wild experimentation we've ever heard but it's less conventional and more exciting indie/electro-pop than his description would suggest.

Shark Week - If You Want me To Stay (For A While)

We're sticking with sounds from America, this time heading for Washington, DC and the debut EP from garage-rock enthusiasts Shark Week. The three tracks on the release are all free to download and our favourite is 'If You Want Me To Stay (For A While)' which has a neat balance of dirty guitars, soulful, distorted vocals and pop hooks.

Calaca Strides - Row By Row

Finally to the burgeoning alt-folk scene of England's North East and the second EP from solo artist Calaca Strides who toured as a member of several bands before going it alone. Taken from 'Brittle Breeze' is the dark and experimental acoustic track 'Row By Row' which uses unconventional sounds to whip up a unique atmosphere that's begging to be used on a soundtrack somewhere.
