The Vettes - Textual

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

This is the first video made for New Orleans 80s-obsessives The Vettes and the idea was to create a nonsensical reinterpretation of educational films from that era. It looks as though it was a heck of a lot of fun to make and the props and effects are suitably ridiculous, making for an entertaining watch and maybe a few memories for those of us who were subjected to such films at school at the time. 'Textual' is a new track that didn't feature on their high-octane album 'Plasticville' and we're told that we can expect more new songs in 2013, so maybe a second full-length is on the cards.

It's one thing taking a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at music of the past, but making a novelty rip-off ruins the effect totally. So the good thing about 'Textual' is that while it may be a nod to 80s radio hits and doesn't take itself too seriously, it's no piss-take either. In fact it's quite a catchy number, kind of like Buggles meeting Roxette only better than that sounds (actually that sounds great in a guilty pleasure kind of way...). So The Vettes are a fun band for sure and there will always be room for fun music. It would be better if more of it was like this, athough some may disagree. You get the impression that where these guys are concerned you'll either love them or hate them.
