EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Ah, sweet revenge! It can sometimes be ugly (hello there Roy Keane trying to break someone's leg) and it can sometimes be triumphant (I'm sure you've got your own personal examples here). Bad Bad Hats grew from the songwriting partnership of Chris Hoge and Kerry Alexander who joined forces with bassist Noah Boswell in Minnesota. Their discovery came at a battle of the bands contest. They lost. Cue revenge plan! Don't fret, there are no sinister plots in the pipeline as far as we know (I guess they'd be unlikely to publicise such ideas though), it seems that they plan on revenge through becoming more successful than the fortunate souls that beat them. Whoever they were, they probably didn't have a band name as good as Bad Bad Hats, so that's one point to these guys already.
I guess the real war will be with the music, and as we don't know who the competition are we can't decide who's currently leading the battle, but this sweet, melodic assault is a good offensive. 'It Hurts' is full of handclaps, possible kazoo and general indiepop loveliness, but it's not as twee as that sounds. 'Super America' is gorgeous pop too; these songs are like little musical sunbeams that brighten up your day. '9AM' is particularly lovable and unless they were off form it must have taken a damn fine band to beat them. There's not a great deal in the way of variety, although folky final song 'A Bout' does offer a slight alternative and shows off those pretty vocals, so five tracks may be the optimum length for this style as much more may start to become a little sickly, but as individual songs go, every one's a winner here.
