Ben Lewis' Swimming Lessons project we assumed, could be on the verge of some kind of breakthrough. That was in May when we featured his single 'Double'. Since then a few festival appearances will have made his name a little more widespread, but just how big can he be? Trading in this variety of alternative dreampop the answer is "reasonably". Swimming Lessons isn't commercial enough to take on the weekly parade of ringtones that we call a singles chart, but critical acclaim and a solid fanbase of more discerning music fans is seeming well within his grasp.
Hearing new track 'Warm Sheets' convinces us further of that possibility. We could trot out the usual words that are used to describe any brand of dreampop, but all you really need to know is that Swimming Lessons version is a touch more individual and very modern. He's not looking back and replicating. He's looking forward and plotting. It's the wrong time to go making predictions now, everyone knows that's what the months of December and January are for as far as the music industry is concerned (yes, I am being sarcastic despite this being true), but expect to hear his name mentioned a bit more frequently soon.
