Charlie Straight - Coco

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

OK, we're formally up to speed with Charlie Straight now. Upon reviewing single 'I Slept Alone' in May we were shocked to find the band had been going for over half a decade. And we're meant to be the ones who keep on top of these things! To make amends we're now watching them like a hawk, and we'd like to give them a little extra internet space to promote their new single 'Coco', because it's ace. It sounds like they've had a busy summer and their fanbase continues to increase. It's not normally the kind of space reserved for bands like this, but there's every chance that, should they release an album soon (this song originally appeared on their previous record), it would break the top 40.

It's worth mentioning again that the band are actually from the Czech Republic, so a chart placing there isn't out of the question, but for their third album (when it arrives) to crack the UK market would be a great achievement. We may be clutching at straws, but 'Coco' is alternative but accessible guitar-pop where the band seem very carefully considered; their every move designed to create the right atmosphere and generally sound bloody massive without using any of the usual studio tricks. They haven't made a song sound big, they've written a big song: two very different things. Whatever, chart placings aren't the be-all and end-all, but making fantastic music is what we're want bands to do, and we're all over this one.
