Owen - Bad Blood

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

You might know Owen better by his real name, Mike Kinsella, formerly of the bands Cap'n Jazz, American Football and Owls. His next album is out on June 2nd and will be called 'L'Ami du Peuple'. It can be difficult to know exactly what to expect from Owen, other than some form of alt-rock will be involved, and that he's been known to have a penchant for 80s hard rock bands too. In new single 'Bad Blood' all bases are pretty much covered and the result is something akin to a guitar virtuoso covering The National.

What starts off as reasonably routine US alt-rock progresses into more complicated time signatures and even some harmonies. It's a familiar sound to anyone who's well versed in this type of thing. Then comes a breakdown in the middle, consisting of little more than vocal and guitar, and from that point he lets the fretboard do most of the talking, even dropping in a short but very 1980s solo. A nice enough song by someone who's allowing themselves to indulge in their passion.
