Kids On The Run - Lies Beyond

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

"A dreamy Nordic atmosphere" is how Swedish group Kids On The Run describe their sound. Formed in 2011 by two long time friends who started working out some ideas on a piano, these songs would go on to be their debut EP. Proper studio time was booked, local stations began to pick up on the music and they added a third member to complete the line-up. The songs are written about different subjects such as nature and anxiety and the general condition of life and all it entails. They're not here to write throwaway pop.

This doesn't mean we have to be all serious and thoughtfully stroke our chin while examining hidden meanings in the lyrics; 'Lies Beyond' isn't just music to be impressed by, it's music to enjoy, and the light and lively beginning ensures this is known from the start. Sure this is alt-folk/pop so that will instantly make people assume that this lot belong in the same category as a certain globally successful UK group, but there's more passion and honesty about this track and it remains untainted by that kind of success, something which can be hugely detrimental to a band's output. As it stands, they've grasped this sound just about perfectly.
