Portland - Deezy Daisy

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

'Tis a curious one is this new single from France-based trio Portland. Being a Kitsune release we were expecting some form of electronica involved somewhere along the line, but the opening bars of this song sound very twee and dated, in fact it's like a poor version of the kind of electro-pop that Madonna used on her early singles. This is a partial trick on their part though, as once the whiff of cheese departs after a few seconds we do get something that closer resembles what we were expecting. 'Deezy Daisy' is still retro through and through, but this is by design.

Currently going with the mantra "the sun is gone but we've got a light", it was either carefully considered that this single should be set for a September release, or a very happy coincidence. There's no getting away with it; this is a pop song to its core. It's not chart pop in its modern form, but digging for any notions of this being some form of alternative pop like that with which Kitsune is commonly associated is a waste of time. This tune is incredibly catchy and will probably remain in your head for a while after it's finished playing, but there's something lovable about it. So while it may be a little out of sync with what we'd normally cover, we're more than happy to try and tempt you to lend an ear to 'Deezy Daisy'. Go on, it'll cheer you up.
