Those who remember The Sound Of Confusion radio show will almost certainly be aware of The High Wire. We were latecomers, only picking up on them on their second album, but the initially underwhelming track 'Odds & Evens' proved to be the ultimate example of a grower, and then we heard 'It's No Secret', an immediate masterpiece and surely one of the best songs of the past decade. This was back in 2010 and their album 'The Sleep Tape', so a follow-up has been a while in the making, but later this month they release their comeback single 'LNOE' which showcases a different sound for the band, one which incorporates a clearer vocal and huge swathes of strings. So, firstly, is it any good? And secondly, if so, is it immediate like 'It's No Secret' or a slow-burner like 'Odds & Evens'?
The answers are definitive. 'LNOE' is a terrific return and the new style suits them down to the ground. This bigger but no more glossy sound could take them up a level. 'LNOE' did take a few listens to reveal its true beauty, but it's well worth the wait. With the lead vocals now stronger, the backing vocals also become clearer as the gap between the two is wider. The song sounds confident and it sounds grand. It's a statement but it's not showing off. They'll have to go some to better one of the finest recordings of recent years, but if 'LNOE' is a taster of things to come then The High Wire's third album could have some more very special songs included on it, and we cannot wait to hear it.
