Black JuJu - DEAD

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Firstly; where did they get that car from? And secondly; does it have a valid MOT? It's been a few years since those were a common sigh on British roads, but it ties in nicely with the B-movie horror feel of the video for this new track from Black JuJu. It's almost a year since they were featured as a band to check out by us, so it's great to finally have new material. It sounds as though the guys have progressed a little too, with 'DEAD' perhaps being their best song thus far. It's still resolutely dirty, raw and lo-fi though, so thankfully there's no change in that department.

It's a frenetic and primal form of garage/rock 'n' roll that these guys make and 'DEAD' shows this off perfectly, mixing in those classic sounds with the discordant grunge and fuzz-rock that came later, not forgetting a little blues in there too. The vocals sound as though they were screamed down a megaphone, into another megaphone, which was linked up to a broken mic and then played at full volume out of an amp that didn't really have the capacity to handle it. Which naturally is a good thing. Also included is some neat guitar that mixes US and UK alt-rock sounds and the kind of drumming which would burn off the calories of a KFC family bucket in the space of a song. It's a vicious little bugger.
