Out This Week - 6th August 2012

The People's Temple - Looter's Game

Shunning such modern devices as digital electronic sounds are Michigan garage throwbacks The People's Temple and their new single 'Looter's Game'. It sounds like it's dropped straight in from 1967 and combines crunching beat-era guitars and psych-rock tendencies to fashion a retro wonder that has a timeless sound from the warming hum of the analogue electrical gear it was recorded on.

Blonds - Run

We're back to musical couples making sweet music together again. New York (by way of Florida) couple Blonds release their debut album 'The Bad Ones' this week and taken from it is superb free download 'Run'. It's a brooding track that pinches segments from trip hop, pop, indie, dreampop and even hard rock to concoct a unique and intoxicating brew.

Beat Connections - Saola

Over on the other side of the US, Seattle-based quartet Beat Connection are also dropping their debut album, and 'The Palace Garden' is made from altogether different elements. This is high-end alt-pop that you can dance to. I'll get the inevitable Friendly Fires comparison out of the way and tell you that this record contains tracks that have the potential make a big splash, including the slightly tropical 'Saola'.

Redd Kross - Researching The Blues

Around the time that Californian veterans Redd Kross were releasing their debut EP, I was being born. So they've been knocking around on and off for quite some time. New album 'Researching The Blues' hits stores this week and the title-track sounds fresh as a daisy and mixes punk with some searing blues-rock. They might be into their fourth decade but they're sounding as vital as ever.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Dum Dum Girls - Lord Knows

Last year (with a little help from the production team behind the mighty Raveonettes) lo-fi bubblegum fuzz-rockers Dum Dum Girls stepped up a gear and produced the absolutely wonderful 'Only In Dreams' album. With a brand new EP, 'End Of Daze', set for a release on September 25th, the quartet have given us it's first cut for free. Again it's a step up from their early tracks, and 'Lord Knows' cuts back on the fuzz and turns on the raw emotion. Even without that glorious production to hide behind, these girls know how to pen a powerful pop track, and this slowie is really quite beautiful.
