Five For Free #104

Hunx - Let Me In

Seth Bogart released his first album as Hunx Earlier this year (breaking temporarily from his band Hunx & His Punx). 'Hairdresser Blues' wasn't much of a departure from the bubblegum punk of his usual outfit. To promote his forthcoming tour of America's West Coast he's letting us have new single 'Let Me In' for free and it's his typical blend of girl group melodies, garage rock attitude and pop sensibilities.

Skeletons On Holiday - Sink Or Swim

This week saw the release of a new single by Welsh/American group Skeletons On Holiday. Both sides of the single are available as free downloads but we're plumping for the disco-rock stomper of 'Sink Or Swim' which rumbles into action with some distorted riffing before hitting us with four-to-the-floor beats and a nifty, soaring chorus. This one's a definite grower too.

Allah-Las - Don't You Forget It

Apart from the whole originality/groundbreaking/setting the seeds for punk aspect, today's generation of 60s garage throwbacks are producing some material like 'Don't You Forget It' that their forerunners would have been over the moon with. This dark and mysterious cut from Californians Allah-Las wouldn't have sounded out of place gracing a Standelles or Remains album. Grab it for free and give it a spin.

Mister 1-2-3-4 - Vermilion Sands

The new single from Brooklyn artist Mister 1-2-3-4 is best described by the man himself: "My latest song takes its inspiration from J.G. Ballard's 1971 collection of short stories, set in a futuristic resort town where the jaded denizens relieve their boredom by playing baroque and cruel games. The track starts off as swinging, Surrealist jazz, then turns on the motorik engine and heads for outer space".

The Dead Formats - Just What The Doctor Ordered

Back on British shores, Essex new-wave band The Dead Formats are readying the release of their debut album 'At Sixes And Sevens' for a September 17th release. Ahead of that they're giving us the raucous new single 'Just What The Doctor Ordered' for free. It's typical anthemic British punk-rock that draws inspiration from acts like The Jam and The Buzzcocks.
