Casablanca - Yes

Single review by KevW

This will be the debut release by London five-piece Casablanca, and these childhood mates certainly come from a prosperous stable, sharing their school grounds with Cajun Dance Party, Theme Park and Bombay Bicycle Club. There must be something in the water round those parts. They have form too, in a past life they were known as Lo-Fi Culture Scene, a band formed before they'd even done their GCSEs, and who shared stages with Foals, Bloc Party and The Maccabees. Their history is starting to read like a who's who of British indie bands of the past few years. After taking time out to complete those all important studies, the lads return with a new moniker and a fresher sound, intent on topping the billing at those gigs this time round.

They're in with a shout too, with 'Yes' being an intricate and well produced amalgamation of crossover sounds such as those made by the list of bands we've already mentioned. Any worries that they may be arriving on the scene a couple of years late should be laid to rest by the song. This isn't just a mix of alternative sounds that have tickled the charts recently, it's also pretty well endowed in the tune department. There is no style over content, coattail hanging going on here. 'Yes' is danceable, radio friendly, alternative enough to be embraced by the indie crowd and not short of a euphoric pop moment or two. With a little bit of luck Casablanca be headed for similar heights to those scaled by their mates after all.
