Out This Week - 3rd March 2014

Nothing - Bent Nail

Since hearing the single 'Dig' last summer, we've had our scuzz-loving ears on shoegaze types Nothing, and recently the Philadelphia band put the second single from their debut album 'Guilty Of Everything' online. 'Bent Nail' is essentially more of the same, and that's exactly what we were hoping for. If we had to pick, this one would be our favourite though. The album is out this week.

Jagwar Ma - Uncertainty

Given that Australia has arguably led the way when it comes to psychedelia getting a look in with the national music press of late, it's a good move on Jagwar Ma's part to make sure that their brand incorporated much more. From debut album 'Howlin'', 'Uncertainty' uses more electronic textures and gives a dancier feel which really sets them apart. It's great when bands have plenty of tricks to use, and this is one such group.

The Mary Onettes - Naive Dream

It's hard to believe that Sweden's The Mary Onettes formed way back in 2000, such has been their constant and steady rise. They crept up on the world quietly. When you do discover them, you notice that they've been amazingly consistent throughout that time and produced some wonderful, occasionally gothic sounding dreampop and indiepop. Check out 'Naive Dream' from new mini album 'Portico'.

We Are Scientists - Make It Easy

Californian duo (formerly a trio) We Are Scientists also formed in 2000, and throughout their career they've given us some pretty good albums, and on those have been peppered some truly ace singles. New LP 'TV En Frainçais' is out today along with single 'Make It Easy', a track that starts off as though it's going to be a little mundane, but then they kick into the second half with some killer choruses and all is well.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

When Nalda Became Punk - Song For Carrie Mathison

Well, depending on what dates you go on, we're either entering spring or will be before long, and let's face it, if you're reading this from the Northern Hemisphere then you'll have had a winter to forget (or more likely, that you'll unfortunately never forget). The weather may not have upped its game just yet, and the tonic for such conditions is often a good dose of joyous, sugar-rush indiepop. Well, you've come to the right place for that. Spanish trio When Nalda Became Punk release their new EP 'Indiepop or Whatever!' this week, and you can forget the "whatever" part of the equation. This is classic, irresistible melodic loveliness that makes the clouds part and the sun come out, filling the sky with invigorating rays of light and energy. Or it does in your mind anyway, and sometimes that can be enough.
