Although based in New York, their logo would suggest that DROWNERS contain members from this side of the Atlantic too. Their music definitely contains elements of both UK and US guitar music. As we mentioned with the release of previous single 'Luv, Hold Me Down', the band have a sound that would've been huge a decade ago, and they would have fitted in nicely to the post Strokes and Libertines landscape, and they're far, far better than many of the bands who achieved success hanging off the coattails of bands of that ilk. Luckily for DROWNERS, there's a chance that guitar-music has ended its lull, something which seems to happen every 25 years or so (the era before punk, the era before baggy, grunge and Britpop) and is on the rise once more.
The other point that should be made about this quartet, is that there might be luck contributing in its own way, but they also have much better songs than a lot of bands we hear in this garage/indie-rock type genre. 'A Button On Your Blouse' is taken from their self-titled album and is a winner from the off. Some songs creep up on you slowly, taking a few spins to get to grips with fully. This doesn't. After just one or two plays you can see that they have a high standard of writing and arranging (as much as arranging can be put into a four-piece guitar band anyway). The guitars sound fantastic, the melodies and vocals are the perfect match and both are brilliantly fitting, with just a hint of Libertines (the non-shambolic version) about the delivery. This is another one of those bands for whom wider recognition is due.
