Band To Check Out: Blank

It's pretty difficult to pinpoint a specific genre in which to place Manchester quartet Blank, and this is despite the fact that their sound isn't particularly ground breaking. They're fans of noisy guitars and effects pedals, they have a traditional four-piece set up, their songs incorporate elements of punk, college rock, indie, shoegaze and art-rock. I guess it's best just to call them an alternative rock band and be done with it. Blank have been together for a year or so and there are currently only a handful of tracks online, and although not perfect there's definite promise in the noise they make.

Latest track 'Some Girls Melt' uses a combination of glistening guitar sounds with the strained groan of distortion accompanying them for its intro, then falls into altogether beefier territory for the chorus. It's something akin to Future Of The Left teaming up with Talking Heads. Recent single 'Canterbury Tale' has the feel of an old post-punk 45 to it; it's scruffy and crude but with a desire to explore less conventional ground, it's not a million miles away from something The Fall may have made. Blank are still unsigned and there's room for improvement but they're definitely showing signs that they may yet be able leave their mark.
