It's quite remarkable to think that US singer-songwriter Alice Cohen has been making music since the late 70's, and not only that, she's never been one to rest on her laurels or to stick to a particular path. She'll still be best remembered as frontwoman of electronic post-punks The Veils, but her forays into the world of art and film show a diverse talent. 'Cascading Keys' is taken from her new solo album 'Pink Keys' and sounds remarkably fresh and contemporary, stretching the boundaries of what she's produced previously while returning to a more synth-led sound.
The original version heads in a almost magical dreampop direction, with glimmering synths and a sweet vocal. The most obvious comparison would be The Cocteau Twins, it certainly takes you on a similarly enchanting and unworldly journey. The choice of Casimer & Casimir to lend their refined ears to a reworking of the song is a wise one. Where some would charge in with beats and chop up the vocal, their subtle touch adds an element of grandeur and a steady build up, taking the track to a different level without losing any of the charm of the original. It's difficult to pick a favourite, both versions of 'Cascading Keys' are brilliantly executed. Great work by all involved.
