Vague Notion - Matter Of Time

Article by KevW

Beginning life in 2012 in the chilly north of Canada, Vague Notion are a duo consisting of Bevan Early and Cheryl Janzen. Last year saw the release of their debut mini-album, and they've followed it with more excellently crafted dark pop on current single 'Matter Of Time'. You'd often associate the wilderness of North America with something a little rootsy or traditional, but this experienced pair have other ideas, looking to trip-hop, goth and electronic experimentation for ideas and inspiration. It's definitely worked out well for them.

'Matter Of Time' is an eerie and almost industrially cold synth-based track that contains elements of Depeche Mode, Portishead and Cocteau Twins, in that it has a mystery, a dreamy quality but also a somewhat disturbed atmosphere. The beats are glitchy and varied rather than settled, and the same goes for the various synth sounds that are used. On the surface it appears to be quite a straightforward darkwave track, but each listen reveals something else, and you soon discover that there's much more going on here than meets the eye. Being the time of year in which we're saturated by often sickly summer pop songs, this menacing beast could be the perfect antidote.
