Get Me Free #37: Shannon and the Clams - It's Too Late

Article by KevW

Come September 11th, San Francisco throwbacks Shannon and the Clams will be releasing their fourth studio album, 'Gone By The Dawn', on Hardly Art Records. This is exciting for two reasons, the first, naturally, being that we'll have a new Shannon and the Clams album, and the second is that they've just announced some UK and European dates, and as a band who've always been famed for their excellent live shows, you should probably take the opportunity to catch them if you can. Oh, and they've shared another song off the album too, and going off what we've heard so far it could be quite an eclectic collection, yet still bear all their hallmarks.

'It's Too Late' is more upbeat than recent single, the spooky, twangy slow-drama of 'Courvette', and features guitarist Cody Blanchard taking care of lead vocals. You can take one group who share male and female lead vocals, are inspired by fifties pop and garage rock, and they turn out like The Raveonettes, but despite the similarities on paper, these guys have always carved their own niche where fuzz is replaced by by almost crude (in a good way) riffs, sparser production and, in the case of the new record, bare-hearted love songs instead of a seedy twilight zone. 'It's Too Late' recalls the kind of proto-garage that people like The Wailers were making in the late fifties and the raw emotion is a stark contrast to the energetic retro-pop bounce of the song. There could be a few surprises in store on the album, and it might just push Shannon and the Clams a little closer to the public eye.
