Native Sons - Pictures

Article by KevW

You'll notice in the press shot above, that south-east trio Native Sons have (presumably) a festival poster on the wall which boldly states Radiohead as headliners. Saying a band sound like Radiohead can mean pretty much anything these days; even Radiohead don't sound like Radiohead any more. But it does suggest ambition and experimentation. Delve into their influences and you'll also find names including Wild Beasts and Dirty Projectors, and that pretty much reaffirms things. This English group don't want to settle for run-of-the mill indie or rock, they want to impress, to come up with new ideas and really stretch their imaginations and writing limits.

That's easier said than done of course, but new single 'Pictures' gives it a heck of a go. You can detect a Wild Beasts flavour from the start (as well a touch of Doves), and also a calm subtlety that generally only comes with maturity and confidence in what you're doing. 'Pictures' may not be quite as inventive as the bands they cite, but it's definitely a step-up from the norm. Expansive and quietly stately, this track has anthemic qualities that make you want to play it over again once it's over, and this comes without any chest-beating bravado or laddish swagger. Native Sons are a cut above most guitar bands, and as this is only their second single we can likely expect even better to come. Mark these guys down as ones to watch.
