The Big Moon - Sucker

Article by KevW

We may be a bit slow on the uptake here, with the limited edition 12" of 'Sucker' having been released back in June and already sold out, but The Big Moon are worth some of our time, and if they're a new find to you, then they might just be worth some of yours too. Plus, the track, along with B-side 'Eureka Moment', can still be downloaded from the usual sites. There's plenty of activity for the band in the coming months too, with a second single planned for autumn, plus they'll be touring solidly for three months, firstly as part of DIY Magazine's Neu tour (alongside VANT and Inheaven), as well as providing support to both Ezra Furman and The Vaccines.

Why all the fuss? Well, the London quartet could have been signed to 4AD during one of their most important phases: the early '90s. They're not, however, some kind of alt-rock revivalists and there is a certain modernity to 'Sucker' as well as a sound that calls to mind a sassier version of, say, The Breeders. This track has the bite of that band and the jagged guitar riffs, but also a soulful and seductive vocal. Plus, it's not quite as simple as the verse/chorus/verse formula used by other bands of that ilk. There seems to be a concerted effort to add more depth and not become stuck to a routine. Think Anna Calvi with a bit less drama and a bit more of a taste for grubby garage-rock and you're halfway to imagining what this sounds like. Although, you could just hit "play" instead, it's recommended...
