Viola Beach are yet to release their debut single and they've already secured national radio play, a slot at Reading and Leeds, as well as playing Liverpool's The Cavern Club. Either they're a right jammy bunch or we could be looking at the next big hopes for British indie music. And it's certainly a British sound they have. Hailing from Warrington, the quartet make no attempt to disguise their accents, something which a few years ago would, despite the distance that separates the two locations, have seen them compared to Arctic Monkeys. There are certain likenesses, but Viola Beach differ in sound enough to carve out their own niche.

'Swings & Waterslides' is upbeat indiepop with a slight tropical twang to the guitar at times, and it's these breaks that lift the song that little bit above others in this field. Throwing some handclaps into a catchy song is hardly the most original thing to do, but there's a reason why it's so common: it works. As well as having the knowledge to add extra flashes to the track to get the best out of it, Viola Beach come across as confident, full of ideas and are comfortable just being themselves. All of which are attributes that will stand them in good stead if genuine success comes their way, and we wouldn't bet against it. The single is out next week and will only be available for free until tomorrow, so get in quick!
