Kick To Kill - Black Kisses
This article also appears on www.soundsxp.com
Traditionally one of the UK's major breeding grounds for guitar music, a new generation of Glaswegian bands seem intent on shaking of the corduroy and cardigans image associated with the city, and the quartet that make up Kick To Kill are helping to do just that. After only two singles they're already making headway, bagging support slots with The Fall, John Cooper Clarke, The Damned and A Place To Bury Strangers, and this month sees the release of third single 'Black Kisses'.
Underpinned by a reverberating, chiming guitar riff and thundering drums it's certainly one to blow the cobwebs away, and dealing in sonics that are far removed from twee indiepop, it shows a lofty ambition. The intense vocals and euphoric cries of "Hey!" somehow seem like a statement of intent, it feels incredibly self-assured. B-side 'Mushroom Cloud' sounds even bigger, comprised of forbidding sheets of grungy guitar and a menacing urgency. These are big sounds and big ideas from a band who may well be destined for Big Things.
