Five For Free #240

Sand - Clay

If you enjoyed the dreamy, psychedelic nods to Grandaddy that made up Yeti Lane's fabulous album 'The Echo Show' last year, then you'll love this new single from Sand, the solo project of Sam Healy of the equally good North Atlantic Oscillation. His self-titled album is out now and this free download of 'Clay' is a bit of a stunner.

Tempura Nights - Cocky

Following a free download last year, 'Cocky' will serve as the first proper single by Tempura Nights, a duo consisting of Alice Rezende from Go Violets and Jacob Knauth from Major Leagues. They're heading straight for a punky, scuzzed-up DIY sound here, and one that bears all the hallmarks of other great bands who made similar noises for the past few decades with a nice pop hook.

Males - Lucky Too

We featured a rather ace track from New Zealand's Tick Mammoth the other day, well from the same scene come Males who include Trick Mammoth's drummer as their bassist apparently, and 'Lucky Too' is the lead-track from their mini-album 'Run Run Run/MalesMalesMales' which has just been released. This is a lively garage/powerpop number that fizzes along brilliantly.

Loves It - The Angels Sing

Austin, Texas duo (with an occasional host of friends) Loves It have a new album out this week titled 'All We Are'. They stay reasonably true to the Americana that they were brought up with, and so free sample 'The Angels Sing' is a lovable and well-made alt-country track with enough about t to prevent it being consigned to the specialist section in record stores.

Los Campesinos! - What Death Leaves Behind

As someone who's always found Los Campesinos! a little hit and miss, it's intriguing and exciting to find them spreading their wings a bit more on new album 'No Blues'. 'What Death Leaves Behind' is a storming indie-rock number that finds them almost unrecognisable from some of their earlier work. Any stereotypes you may have towards the band could be banished with this one.
