Cop On The Edge - Friday Night Anywhere EP

EP review by KevW

Whoa. Cop On The Edge already have a handful of singles and a debut album available and I'm only hearing them for the first time now? Good god, what have I been missing out on? These four new tracks from the London quartet are utterly sublime. Pick your favourite arty post-punk type bands for a quick comparison if you like (Talking Heads, Gang Of Four etc.) and them imagine them updated, tight as fuck and with some tunes so killer that there's probably been an arrest warrant issued for them.

'Drones' is a galloping slab of new-wave powered by some gutsy bass and muscular drumming also found on 'Time's Arrow', both songs would be a grand edition to any band's arsenal, but 'The Rule' and 'Runaway' raise the bar even higher. The former's "stop, echo, drop, repeat" refrain is again driven by some hefty drumming that's counterbalanced by the cooing vocals that follow it. The awesome 'Runaway' is one of the finest songs you're likely to hear for a while, throwing a sackload of melody at their formula and ending up sounding like the best song Stellastarr* never wrote. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some catching up to do.
