Band To Check Out: Sleep Party People

Article by Bloopie

Drawing inspiration from director David Lynch's surrealistic work and Angelo Badalamenti's scores, Sleep Party People is the invention of Copenhagen-based musician Brian Batz, who took to his home equipment back in 2008 in search of his own unique sound. Batz heads a group of five Danish musicians, sporting mysterious bunny masks and armed with an array of instruments with which to brew a cocktail of bizarre and extraordinary dreampop/shoegaze tunes that carry a compelling feel. The enigmatic and indistinct vocals combine with an ethereal melody to create a sound that is dark but undeniably catchy.

The rich blend accompanies the listener on a dream-like venture to the border between the sad and sweet, the tragic and beautiful, and seems to keep evolving into whatever it wishes. Following their self-titled debut album in early 2010, Sleep Party People recently released their second album, 'We Were Drifting On A Sad Song', to much greater acclaim. The new single 'Chin' is easily the most danceable and upbeat track off an eclectic portfolio of melancholy. The mystical sound created by the gloomy Scandinavian bunnymen, influenced by a spectrum of genres from indie-rock to baroque pop, is different to anything else you've heard this year.
