Band To Check Out - Overlake

Article by ethan@thesoundofconfusion.com

Overlake are a three-piece indie-rock, shoegaze/alt-rock project from Jersey City who cite some of their influences as Ride, MBV, Sonic Youth, Dino Jr., Slowdive, Built to Spill and Yo La Tengo. They are on Killing Horse records. I saw them at Muchmores' in Brooklyn and they were fantastic.

They recently released an LP called 'Sighs' which is available for sale and you can also find it on Spotify. The band is Tom Barrett, Lysa Opner and Scotty Imp. The songs are slow and fuzzy, with restrained, elegant drumming, prominent basslines, pretty guitar and dreamy vocals. They were loud live.

On the record the first and sixth track are instrumental... two parts of an eerie, foreboding piece which ought to be used for some kind of show-down scene in a film or something. Track eight, 'Our Sky' reminds me of a Meatpuppets song... it's one of the more uptempo numbers. It's a slow, sad, haunting record; it gets heavy now and then, but it's always slow and sad and haunting.
