UK Blog Sound Of 2014

Article by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

You're probably aware of the BBC Sound Of 2014 poll in which various industry bigwigs and journalists decide which major label playthings we're all supposed to be listening to in the coming year, but more recently, the good people at Breaking More Waves have taken the money and the shameless plugs out of the equation and polled music sites just like ours - people that actually care about the music rather than the potential for shifting units - and created a list compiled from around 60 blogs and music sites to come up with a much more entertaining selection. The long list of 16 acts that picked up the most votes can be found here. The winners will be announced on January the 2nd, so stay tuned for that, and in the mean time, here are the runners and riders!

Banks - Sultry electronic soul from Los Angeles

Embers - Epic cinematic rock from Manchester

George Ezra - Singer songwriter with bluesy tones

Hella Better Dancer - Dark atmospheric indie rock

Hockeysmith - Genre hopping sisters from Cornwall

Honeyblood - Raw D-I-Y Glasgow duo

IYES - Boy girl pop duo from Brighton

Khushi - Melodic acoustic based pop

Lyla Foy - Solo singer performing intimately quiet songs

Marika Hackman - Female acoustic singer songwriter

Mt Wolf - Folktronica with ethereal/operatic vocals

Rhodes - Male acoustic singer songwriter

Royal Blood - Dirty lo-fi rock 'n' roll from Brighton

Sivu - Idiosyncratic singer songwriter

Sophie Jamieson - Atmospheric folk

Wolf Alice - Grunge and indie referencing band

I think you'll find that an impressive and eclectic list! Unfortunately since the first round of voting a few weeks back, Mt. Wolf have decided to call it a day, so we hope this isn't a curse! Although none of the acts we voted for made the long list, several of them have featured on the site this year and received favourable reviews, plus Embers featured in our Sound Of 2013 list in January. We believe this selection beats the BBC list hands down, so stay tuned and we'll let you know who the winners are soon - and thanks to Breaking More Waves for organising the voting. A full list of the sites that helped choose can be found below.
