Band To Check Out: Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5

Article by James M

The winter’s over and spring is well and truly on its way. What better way to get in the mood for sunny days and sweaty nights than three new tracks from Glasgow’s Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5? Eclectic is an overused word when describing music, however not in this case. ‘Bouncy Ball’ is a reggae fuelled/football themed party and everyone is welcome. “She was a goalie in me five-a-side team, she was a throw back to the old times when men were men and women were men” we’re told as the carnival gets going.

Next up, as the name might suggest ‘Capturardo’ wouldn’t sound out of place in a Western movie. You might not have found many John Wayne movies in which he galloped along whilst making jibes at the Tories, but it’s definitely a combination that works. ‘Dance Off’ is the most immediate of the 3 songs here, a slick bass line struts its stuff before a brass section breaks out and we’re told “we’re gonna have a dance off tonight”. Lyrically it’s as out-there as the rest, with talk of alligators, mashed potatoes, Michael Jackson and the theme from 90’s sitcom Friends. Expect more madness from their debut album in May.
