Historically, Australia has always punched above its weight when it comes to garage-rock. Compilations have been dedicated to the '60s originators, they were at th forefront of punk, the more recent revival at the turn of the century also included notable bands from down under, and now, even though the focus is on their psych and electro-pop scenes, there are still some splendid garage bands reaching our ears. It won't be much of a surprise that Loon Lake are from Melbourne, the city seems to be on fire at the minute.
With a debut album, 'Gloamer', set for a release on October 11th, the band are putting out single 'Carolina', and while we (and they) call this garage-rock, you need to be thinking of the modern variety, not the sounds of the past. This sound is perhaps a natural development from The Easybeats, The Saints or The Vines, but it doesn't replicate them. 'Carolina' sounds bang up to date with a grungy feel being absorbed into this primal rock tune. Perhaps, if the album lives up to expectation, Loon Lake will be considered next in that line of important bands.
