My Tiny Robots - Zut Alors

Single review by KevW

The series of winter singles from Edinburgh's My Tiny Robots is turning out to be a cracker. When they began the run with a free download late last summer, I said it would be a tough challenge for the upcoming releases to match it. Well, not satisfied with bettering it once (November's 'Guild Of Defiants') they've upped the ante again and surpassed both tracks with superb new single 'Zut Alors'.

The quartet possess a changing sound that thwarts any attempt to pigeonhole them, they use the term 'oddpop' and to be honest that's as good a description as any. With its slightly ridiculous lyric of "Je t'adore, baby, zut alors!" this track positions them somewhere between the madcap genius of Super Furry Animals and the oddball strumming of The Beta Band, and makes for a song that is at once hopeful, serious, sweet and humorous. With another single still to come in this set, we're likely to be in for another treat soon. My Tiny Robots are the band that keeps on giving.
